Mahalo for your support in making Between Shadow and Light – an evening of creative inspiration and joyful inclusion with artist Boz Schurr – a tremendous success!
Held the evening of October 18, 2018, at Café Julia, Between Shadow and Light celebrated creativity and the connection between art and mental health with good food, drink, music, art and friends. Local artists Linda Hess, Janet Tran, Zoe Liu, Sam Guerrero, Heather Williams, and Susan Schultz engaged guests in art activities to stimulate their creativity. Muralist, illustrator and fine artist Boz Schurr, who is also an art teacher at Kamehameha Schools, was commissioned for this event to provide a piece that tells a story about mental health. Boz unveiled her triptych created specifically for this event, “Umbra, Penumbra, and Antumbra (Shadows Cast by Celestial Bodies)” and shared her vision of mental health as a spectrum just like the rainbow where no color is better than another. (See more about Boz’s vision here: Lifting the Veil) Executive Director Trisha Kajimura, Advisory Board Chair Michael Broderick and supporter Dawn Tawata shared words of inspiration and gratitude.
Boz also donated a generous amount of art which guests won through a raffle. Deputy Director Pedro Haro called the names of excited guests who took home beautiful pieces as well as the event souvenir, which was a gratitude journal with covers printed from Boz’s artwork. Boz also donated her services to paint a custom mural and the winning bid was from Adelia Chung of Spectrum Wealth Management, noting that the name of her firm appropriately matched the theme of the evening. Adelia’s business partner, Bryan Nakamoto had the winning bid on Boz’s large piece, “Antisolar Point (The Rainbow All Around Us).” We are looking forward to see what Boz paints at their office!
The event raised over $37,000 to help Mental Health America of Hawaii with our mission of promoting wellness through advocacy, education, and service, and gave us an opportunity to talk about mental health and wellness in an open and accepting way, reducing stigma and encouraging everyone to continue the conversation.
